    The Story

    About Girgaon Chowpatty

Girgaon Chowpatty is Mumbai's most cherished beach — a crescent of sand at the northern end of Marine Drive where the city comes alive every evening. Famous across India for the spectacular Ganesh Chaturthi Visarjan celebrations, it is equally beloved for its legendary street food: bhel puri, pav bhaji, vada pav, and sizzling corn. The sea breeze, the lights, and the energy make it a quintessential Mumbai experience.

    History & Significance

Girgaon Chowpatty has been woven into Mumbai's social life for well over a century, long the bathing and recreation ground of the Marathi-speaking Girgaon neighbourhood. It won pan-India fame through Bal Gangadhar Tilak, who in 1893 turned Ganesh Chaturthi into a mass public festival as a rallying point against colonial rule. Chowpatty became the great culminating venue where Ganesh idols are brought for immersion — the Visarjan — amid chanting, drums and devotion. On the final Visarjan day it hosts one of the largest public gatherings anywhere in the world.
