About Marine Drive
Stretching 3.6 km along the Arabian Sea from Nariman Point to Babulnath, Marine Drive is Mumbai's most romantic promenade. Built in the 1920s on reclaimed land, its curving street lamps create a glittering arc of light after sunset, earning it the timeless nickname 'Queen's Necklace'. Lined by Art Deco buildings, it is the city's living room — where joggers, lovers, and dreamers gather every day.
History & Significance
Marine Drive was laid out in the 1920s on land reclaimed from Back Bay under the Backbay Reclamation Scheme. The curving boulevard follows the natural arc of the bay and is flanked by one of the world's finest ensembles of Art Deco buildings, raised through the 1930s and 40s — inscribed by UNESCO in 2018 within the 'Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles of Mumbai'. After dark its street lamps trace a shimmering arc that, seen from the heights of Malabar Hill, resembles a string of pearls — the 'Queen's Necklace'. It has been the backdrop to countless films and the city's biggest public celebrations.
