About Babulnath Temple
One of Mumbai's oldest Shiva temples, Babulnath sits majestically atop a small hill in Girgaon, offering stunning views of Marine Drive, the Arabian Sea, and the city skyline. Dating back nearly 800 years, this temple is named after the babul trees that once blanketed the hillside. The daily milk abhishek and Monday prayers draw thousands of devotees every week.
History & Significance
Babulnath is one of Mumbai's oldest and most revered Shiva temples. Its origins trace to the 12th century, when a Shiva shrine is said to have stood on this hill; after the lingam was rediscovered, the present temple was built around 1780. The name comes from the babul (acacia) trees that once covered the slope. Perched above Girgaon Chowpatty and south of Malabar Hill, it commands a fine view of the Marine Drive coastline. During Maha Shivaratri the temple is magnificently decorated and devotees climb its steps through the night for darshan.
