About Shree Mahalakshmi Temple
Perched dramatically on a rocky promontory overlooking the Arabian Sea, Shree Mahalakshmi Temple is one of Mumbai's oldest and most beloved shrines. The temple houses three powerful goddesses — Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, and Mahasaraswati — and is famous for its breathtaking sea views and the spectacular evening aarti.
History & Significance
Legend holds that Dhakji Dadaji, the contractor building the Hornby Vellard sea wall that joined Mumbai's islands, dreamt of the goddess lying beneath the waters and recovered three idols — Mahalakshmi, Mahakali and Mahasaraswati — from the sea. He enshrined them in the present temple, built in 1831 on a small headland jutting into the Arabian Sea. During Navratri the temple is wrapped in thousands of lights and flowers for nine nights of celebration. Mahalakshmi, goddess of wealth and fortune, is regarded as a patron deity of the city.
