The spiritual heart of Mumbai, Shree MumbaDevi Temple is the namesake of the city itself. 'Mumbai' derives from 'Mumba Aai' — Mother Mumba — the fierce goddess worshipped here for centuries. Originally located where CST railway station now stands, the temple was relocated to Bhuleshwar in the 18th century and remains a powerful symbol of the city's identity.
History & Significance
The Mumbadevi Temple is the spiritual root of Mumbai's name — 'Mumbai' comes from 'Mumba Aai', Mother Mumba in Marathi, the tutelary goddess of the Koli fishing community who first settled the seven islands. The original shrine stood near Bori Bunder, roughly where Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus now stands; it was taken down around 1737 as the British expanded the fort, and the goddess was re-enshrined at the present Bhuleshwar site. Today she presides amid the noise and gold of Zaveri Bazaar as a powerful emblem of the city's ancient identity.
