Where should you go for festival darshan?
- Siddhivinayak, Prabhadevi — the city's most loved Ganesha shrine; expect the year's longest queues. A dawn visit matters more this fortnight than at any other time of year.
- Lalbaugcha Raja — Mumbai's most famous sarvajanik idol; the navsachi (wish-fulfilling) line runs 24 hours and more. Go for the sheer sight of it; plan a full day if you join the queue.
- Pandal-hopping by car — GSB Seva (King's Circle), Andhericha Raja, Khetwadi's giants and the Girgaon lanes, threaded between crowds in an evening.
- Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati, Pune — the festival's most spectacular decorated darshan, 150 km away; our Pune day trip (₹3,000) runs through the festival, and “Dagdusheth decoration” is a pilgrimage in itself.
How do you actually get darshan during the festival?
Start before dawn — it is the only quiet window. Book at least a week ahead (festival demand fills private vehicles fast), keep visarjan days (especially 25 September) for watching processions rather than crossing the city, and let your driver re-sequence around closures; the police publish route changes daily during Ganeshotsav. One timing detail almost nobody publishes, and it catches visitors out every year: on the biggest Ganesh days — Bhadrapad Ganesh Chaturthi itself, and Maghi Ganesh Jayanti — the Siddhivinayak temple closes its doors to devotees from roughly 10:45 AM to 1:30 PM for pooja, naivedhya and aarti. Arrive inside that window on 14 September and you are waiting it out, on top of the festival queue. It is the single strongest reason to make festival darshan a dawn errand.
